Work in Canada

Working in Canada is an attractive option for many people from all over the world. Each year, close to 350,000  skilled foreign workers come to Canada in search of new opportunities.

Most foreign nationals require a permit to be eligible to work in Canada. However, there are some exemptions. A work permit is a legal document permitting a foreign national to engage in employment while inside of Canada.

Basically, there are two main types of work permits, under which there is also a category of work visas.

Open Work Permit

It is not a job-specific option; no employer is involved, which means that you can work for any Canadian employer. It also exempts you from requiring a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to qualify for a Canadian work visa. Some examples are:

– Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWP)

– Spousal Sponsorship from Inside of Canada

– International Experience Canada (IEC) (working holiday visa)

– Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP)

– Spouse Accompanying International Student or Worker

Employer-Specific Work Permit

For a work permit that allows foreign nationals to work for one specific employer in Canada, foreign workers need to meet conditions and comply with them. This work permit limits a foreign national to one employer at a specific location, with a duration of employment.

Most of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) need LMIA approval. However, there are a few exemptions.

International Free Trade Agreements: International Mobility Program.

International Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) contains provisions to facilitate, on a reciprocal basis, temporary entry for business persons. Eligible persons entering an FTA generally require a work permit and job offer but are exempt from a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).
